Insane in the Membrane farming

Insane in the Membrane is a complex meta achievement (actually, a Feat of Strength) that involves, among other things, farming/acquiring 1400 Heavy Junkboxes, and turning in 80+ Librams with their quest ingredients. By most accounts, this is the most difficult achievement in World of Warcraft. So where is the profit angle, hmm?

The Librams are farmable in Dire Maul, but the Pristine Black Diamonds that accompany their quest turnins are a low drop from all level 60ish mobs. So there will always be a need to purchase the diamonds off the auction house, for players working on the meta achievement.

In the case of Junkboxes, a Rogue of 58-60 or better needs to farm them. BRD Arena area or Hearthglen are favored areas for this task. Expect 50-100 junkboxes per hour. They fetch 10 gold each or more from would-be achievers, who often post on official realm forums to find a lockbox farmer to hire.

Here's a list of Insane items and "moving prices" observed since 3.3.2:

  • Libram of Protection - 150-200 gold
  • Libram of Focus - 150-200 gold
  • Libram of Rapidity - 125-150 gold
  • Pristine Black Diamond - 200-250 gold
  • Heavy Junkbox (Rogue farmable only) - 5-10 gold

The BOP ingredients that accompany Libram of Rapidity discourage its use as a quest turnin relative to the other two librams listed. Once in a while, the librams are severely undervalued by a seller, and can be found at the price of the other level 60 quest librams (5-10 gold), a very easy 150-200 gold for the reseller.

How to profit off these items? Snipe them and resell at or above the moving price (May vary based on your realm's economy; mine is high population). Or, if you want a grinding option, farm Dire Maul for librams (and cloth/greens/blues to disenchant), or Hearthglen pickpocketing if you're a rogue.

On my realm I am one of only a few players whom I consistently see marketing to this niche, but I'm sure that will change as posts like this spread the word. This can only be a good thing from the point of view of the achievers who will end up paying less for their quest goods. Good luck!

3.3.3 first reactions: Frozen Orbs and Glyphs

Well, after a long hiatus I am back posting.

Just a few notes until I can get a full patch 3.3.3 analysis going:

- Frozen Orbs have stabilized around 22-30 gold on my PVP realm. Good news for everyone that bought them at 15 recently.
- Glyphs related to 3.3.3 class buffs have skyrocketed. You can still snipe some cheap ones for less than 5 gold for the next few days and resell at 300-400%. Glyph of Starfall is a prime example.

Monster 3.2 Warcraft Patch Gold Guide

Monster 3.2 Warcraft Patch Gold Guide

As with all major WoW content releases, the upcoming 3.2 "Crusader's Coliseum" patch will bring many changes that allow alert players to profit at the Auction House by preparing ahead of time. There will be new crafted items, some changes to professions and a lot of existing materials will become more valuable, with very few items devalued. The basics:

- Crusader's Coliseum, new 5, 10 and 25-player dungeon and raid content
- Isle of Conquest, 40v40 siege battleground
- New Argent Tournament daily quests

With the new PVE content, the opportunities to make money are largely related to 1) the expanded daily quests available at the Argent Tournament, and 2) the introduction of Tier 9 level crafted items and their new bind-on-equip 'orb' material Crusader's Orb, which drops in the Crusader's Coliseum heroic raids.

I'm not going to go into detail on the new daily quests because I personally find dailies to be a very low gold return for the time invested, but if you are already doing the Argent Tournament circuits you should be able to fit them right in.

Now for the details of what you need to buy now, in order to profit for weeks to come after patch day. If I list an item, it means start buying it from the Auction House and Trade Channel (get the AuctioneerSuite from Auctioneer if you don't yet have it), and save it for 3.2 for your own crafting, or relisting as soon as the value rises significantly. Some of the demand will depend on the number of raiding guilds on your server getting patterns to drop, but everything here should be in play within 1 month of 3.2, and the raw materials will be expensive long before those patterns are available.

General item changes in 3.2

All dungeons which dropped Emblems of Heroism or Valor, will now drop Emblems of Conquest. This is a big change, and I'd recommend that you use any remaining Emblems of Heroism to buy Frozen Orbs for sale on the auction house. The plus side is that Frozen Orbs should increase in value since the emblems-for-orbs transaction is no longer a great idea, and they are going to be used to create epic gems (see Jewelcrafting changes below!), so if you can buy them cheap now, stock up.

For item stats, block value bonus on all items has been doubled, so if you craft items that have +block value on them (other than shields, which aren't included) you may want to stock up on their materials now. Likewise, resilience is being changed to reduce a percent of all incoming damage, not just damage-over-time, so the PVP crafted items and resilience enchants should become even more valuable for players gearing up for Arena and Battlegrounds.

Blacksmithing, Leatherworking and Tailoring in 3.2

The changes for these professions which will affect the economy are similar. They involve the new Tier 9-level crafted items which use Crusader's Orb, the new Crusader's Coliseum heroic raid dropped material. Here's the breakdown of confirmed materials used for new items, by professions - make sure you have as much of these items on hand as you can get before patch day!
  • Blacksmithing: Titansteel Bar, Saronite Bar, Eternal Life, Majestic Zircon, Deadly Saronite Dirk, Crusader Orb
  • Leatherworking: Nerubian Chitin, Arctic Fur, Eternal Shadow, Eternal Water, Eternal Life, Heavy Borean Leather, Eternal Air, Greater Cosmic Essence, Abyss Crystal, Crusader Orb
  • Tailoring: Cardinal Ruby, Eye of Zul, Majestic Zircon, King's Amber, Spellweave, Ebonweave, Moonshroud, Dream Shard, Crusader Orb

Alchemy in 3.2

Alchemists have really lucked out in this patch, and the epic gems we have all been waiting for in WotLK are going to be available via Alchemy transmutes. There are six transmutes available at skill 440, each one sharing the same 20 hour cooldown, so start hoarding their materials now:
The transmute cooldown means that it is going to take at least 2 weeks after patch before the hardcore raiders are fully epic gemmed, and the general market will continue throughout the expansion, with every new item requiring new epic gems for players. Alchemists should be able to sell their daily cooldown for 25g or more for each day from this point, as it will be much in demand in addition to the current titansteel bar market.

Cooking in 3.2

For cooking, the number of Dragonfin Angelfish required to craft the premiere melee food, Blackened Dragonfin has been reduced to 1. This means the value of Dragonfin Angelfish will drop noticeably. I'd suggest selling your stocks now.

Engineering in 3.2

Almost all the Engineering profession-specific enchants got buffed noticeably for this patch. My personal feeling is that we are going to see more players choose Engineering as a result of these buffs, since for a very long time it's not been a worthwhile profession for PVE. The new changes make it viable for DPS and Healing classes to drop tailoring or leatherworking for engineering.

All engineering materials from skill 0-450 should be on "buy" status - due to the large buffs to the profession I predict that we will see a lot of switchers, who will need to buy everything in a hurry and will be willing to pay a premium for it. Check engineering powerlevelling guides for an idea of what to buy for that niche.

Stock up on Saronite Bars as well as all the lower level bars, ore and engineering widget materials, if you see them cheap! The reason I advise Saronite Bars and not Saronite Ore, is because ore will remain most valuable for Jewelcrafting. Bars often go much cheaper than the ore that is used to make them, and many new Engineers levelling their skill will not be miners, thus preferring to purchase bars since they can't smelt their own. Double win for resellers.

Jewelcrafting in 3.2

New recipes have been added to cut various flavors of epic gem from the Alchemist-transmuted raw gems. These recipes require a Jewelcrafting skill of 450, and are purchased with Dalaran Jewelcrafter's Tokens, so save those tokens, do your JC dailies and consider stocking up on Damaged Necklace from the Auction House before the rush. There's also a new prismatic gem, Nightmare Tear which gives +10 to all stats, crafted from a vendor pattern with Dragon's Eye x1 and Infinite Dust x5.

Here are the ways to get uncut epic gems:
  • Transmuting, see Alchemy news above
  • Icy Prism can now yield uncut epic gems, so save those Frozen Orbs
  • Prospecting Titanium Ore will yield epic gems - stock up on as much Titanium Ore as you can get. Prospecting Titanium Ore will also yield Titanium Powder, which can be turned in for a quest in stacks of 10 for a reward of 1 Dalaran Jewelcrafter's Token. Preliminary results from the Public Test Realm show approximately 1 epic gem and 2 dust per stack of Titanium Ore prospected, which is in line with the rare gem yields from Saronite Ore prospecting.
  • Purchased with Honor
  • Purchased with Emblem of Heroism

Final notes

As far as the economy goes, there don't seem to be any noticeable updates to Enchanting, Fishing, Herbalism, Mining, or Skinning. For Inscription, Glyph of Unholy Blight got buffed to now be a flat damage increase, so save those to sell after the patch as it will be a much more desirable glyph.

If you're a crafter, make sure to note the profession-specific sections above. If you're an auction house player, you know what to buy now to be ready for patch day, so get to it. Good luck to everyone making your easy gold in 3.2!

Cataclysm WoW Expansion Rumors

Well, the latest big World of Warcraft rumor is that the next expansion will be named Cataclysm. This is supposed to be taking place in the Maelstrom, in and below the Great Sea between Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms, in the game world of Azeroth. Here we will encounter many unfriendly Naga, and friendly Goblin NPCs. A leaked zone list published before the Burning Crusade release, which has been accurate so far in the two current expansions, gives us this list for Cataclysm, with level ranges for each zone:

  • Gilneas - 77 to 80
  • Grim Batol - 78 to 81
  • Kul Tiras - 79 to 82
  • Kezan - 81 to 86
  • Tel Abim - 83 to 85
  • Zandalar - 84 to 87
  • Plunder Isle - 86 to 88
  • The Broken Isles - 87 to 90
  • The Maelstrom - 89 to 90

You might be thinking, "Interesting, but how can I make gold from this information?" Well, having a head start on the lay of the land never hurts! For example, we can tell that Gilneas, Grim Batol and Kul Tiras will all be early locations where the new Cataclysm cloth and mote types can be farmed, new herbs and minerals harvested, and the first powerlevelling spots will be in these zones.

Speaking of powerlevelling, we can see that Kezan has the largest level range of any Cataclysm zone, 81 through 86 (similar to Nagrand in the Burning Crusade, and Sholazar Basin in Wrath of the Lich King). My guess is that we'll see the longest lasting grind spots, the longest harvesting circuits, and the best overall gold farming in the Kezan zone. And with a starting monster level of 81, any epic level 80 characters will be able to jump right into Kezan and skip the green gear rewards in the lowbie zones.

As soon as specific Beta information for the expansion is known, I'll be analyzing the new professions, items and loot tables in depth, so you can get a jump on the auction house competition on your server when Cataclysm patch day hits!

Profiting from Patch 3.1 Crafted Items

I've gathered a list of all the materials used for the many new crafting recipes in the World of Warcraft 3.1 patch coming up Tuesday, April 14th. Purchasing these items now for later resale can lead to great profit as they will be in high demand in the coming weeks, especially as the epic Ulduar patterns start becoming available. Gold prices for these items will vary depending on your server, but as usual you'll want to use Auctioneer to watch trends and buy low.

Without further ado, here is the list:

WoW Jewelcrafting Gold Guide, Part 2: Dailies

In this, part 2 of my WoW Jewelcrafting Gold Guide, we will talk about the best current perk of being a "JC" as it pertains to income: the daily quest from the Jewelcrafting trainer in Dalaran.

Getting Started

To start with, you'll want to be at least a level 375 Jewelcrafter. Buy a Chalcedony from the Auction House (Or prospect it, see part 1 of this guide!). Get to Dalaran - my favorite way is to offer to buy a port from a mage in Trade channel. Once in Dalaran, head over to Timothy Jones (pictured to the right), the Grand Master Jewelcrafting trainer in the Magus Commerce Exchange in the northwest part of Dalaran. You can ask a guard if you have trouble finding him - and his coordinates are 40.76/34.48.

If you are level 65 or above, as well as being a 375 Jewelcrafter or better, Timothy Jones will offer you a quest, "Finish the Shipment." He asks you for the Chalcedony (Which you brought, because you were following this guide. Right?) Once you complete this quest, it will open up a set of six daily quests, and you'll receive one of these quest randomly each day from this point.

These quests are quite easy - they require you to go kill a certain type of mob, combine the mob's quest item drop with two green-quality gems, and finally combine everything for a quest turnin. The key is to reach these mobs as quickly as possible, and for them to be as easy to kill as possible, in order to not spend much time completing each day's quest. If you can finish the quest in five minutes including travel time, you'd be looking at the equivalent of 3000+g/hour for those five minutes! Later in this article I will tell you where to complete each quest in one of the two starting areas in Northrend: Borean Tundra or Howling Fjord.

The Tokens

When you bring the completed quest item back to Timothy Jones in Dalaran, he will give you a special Jewelcrafter-only token, "Dalaran Jewelcrafter's Token", which is used as currency with the vendor standing next to him. One token will purchase a Dragon's Eye; the patterns sold by the vendor require three to six tokens and thus are fairly restricted in availability - they provide another avenue to exclusive supply of a certain gem on your server, if you can figure out which patterns are still unavailable between the other crafters.

The Dragon's Eye

For the purpose of this strategy, we will purchase Dragon's Eyes with the tokens as it is a guaranteed, "set and forget" commodity which has a fairly fixed and limited availability - there can be no more than one per jewelcrafter per sale per day on any one server. Cut gems can be very profitable especially with rarely held patterns and the best-in-slot gems, but they require more time to manage and are a topic for another post.

On my servers, Dragon's Eye sells for between 250g-450g depending on supply and demand. It is required for the Jewelcrafter-only bind-on-pickup epic gems, as well as for the Titanium ring/necklace epic bind-on-equip items: four Dragon's Eye are needed to craft each item. So you can see there will be a market for Dragon's Eye as long as Wrath of the Lich King is current. Which should be about 18+ months if history repeats itself. That is conservatively 136,000G earning potential from one jewelcrafter doing the daily quest over the 18 months!

The Craftables

Here are the epic items crafted with the Dragon's Eye. These are more or less the standard for beginning raiders, and as such you can expect that thousands of players per server will need 8 Dragon's Eye each to get going. Especially if you're on a crowded server, you can also directly serve this market by crafting and selling the Titanium... items yourself. Smaller realms may have less of a direct market and you'll find more people gathering the materials themselves rather than relying on the Auction House to provide the finished item at a premium for them.

The Daily Quests

Without further ado, here is the list of Wrath of the Lich King's Jewelcrafting daily quests and how to get them done as easily as possible at any level 70+:

Shipment: Bright Armor Relic
Requires: Elemental Armor Scrap, Bloodstone, Huge Citrine

The Elemental Armor Scrap is found on Elemental-type mobs, which should be familiar to longtime WoW players. The lowest level, easiest to kill Elementals are Frozen Elementals, found in Borean Tundra just south of Death's End, on the beach. They are level 70-71, and have about 9000 health. They have an "Ice Spike" attack which knocks you in the air and does a minor amount of damage. You should be able to reliably kill them before they get a chance to cast it, though! Here's the map for Frozen Elementals:
To get to the Frozen Elementals, you can either fly directly from Dalaran to Un'upe and ride east, or if you don't have that flight path yet, you can take the boat from Stormwind Harbor to Valiance Keep, then ride northeast past Kaskala and Un'upe.

Shipment: Blood Jade Amulet
Requires: Vrykul Amulet, Dark Jade, Bloodstone

Vrykul Amulets are found on Vrykul, which are a new humanoid mob variety in Wrath of the Lich King. There is a patch of low level Vrykul called Skadir Raiders in Borean Tundra very close to Valiance Keep, which drop the Amulets. They have about 9000 health, and are level 69 - abilities are a Freezing Trap like a hunter's trap, and a spear throw. You can get the Amulet off the other Vrykul mob types in this group as well. Here's the map for Skadir Raiders:

Shipment: Glowing Ivory Figurine

Requires: Shoveltusk Ivory, Chalcedony, Shadow Crystal

Shoveltusk Ivory is found on a new Beast type mob: "Northrend Shoveltusk". The lowest level I could find are "Shoveltusks" in Howling Fjord, but they're all over the place there - you should have no trouble hunting one down as soon as you get out of town at Valgarde. To get there, you can either fly from Dalaran, or take the boat from Menethil Harbor to Valgarde (Port to Ironforge and fly to Menethil Harbor in the Wetlands, first). As for the mobs themselves, Shoveltusks have a "Head Butt" ability which confuses its target for 3 seconds (similar to Rogues' "Blind"). Here's the map for them:

Shipment: Intricate Bone Figurine
Requires: Proto Dragon Bone, Chalcedony, Dark Jade

Proto Dragon Bones are found on, unsurprisingly, proto drakes. The Proto-Whelp Hatchling in Howling Fjords are level 71, have about 9500HP, a flame breath attack and are considered the easiest mob to kill for this quest. To get to them, fly or boat to Valgarde, then head west past Utgarde Keep to the Ember Clutch. Map to find the Proto-Whelp Hatchlings at Ember Clutch:

Shipment: Shifting Sun Curio
Requires: Scourge Curio, Sun Crystal, Shadow Crystal

Scourge Curio is found on any Northrend Scourge (Undead). So this one is very easy - just fly from Dalaran to Valiance Keep (or take the boat from Stormwind Harbor), head out to the beach and start killing the undead Crypt Crawlers that are just outside. They are level 68-69, have 7-8000HP and their special attack is "Crypt Scarabs" - they summon little pet critters that run after you and attack you. Here's the map showing their location just outside Valiance Keep:

Shipment: Wicked Sun Brooch
Requires: Iron Dwarf Brooch, Huge Citrine, Sun Crystal

To get the Iron Dwarf Brooch, you need to kill Dark Iron Dwarves! An old favorite from Classic WoW, they are found first in Howling Fjords in Wrath of the Lich King. Head out from Valgarde, then go south until you reach the bridge across the main fjord which gives you a path east. The dwarves are found in a line on a hill to your right as you go east before reaching the Explorer's League Outpost, guarding their mines. Iron Rune Steelguards will be the first dwarves you see - they are level 69-70 and have 8-9000HP, with two Warrior abilities: Charge and Demoralizing Shout. Here's their map:

Conclusion

I hope this guide to the dailies saves you some time doing the research I did, and that you find the way to make the most of each daily quest reward token for the market you're in, whether it be recipes, crafting or the Dragon's Eye sales. Feel free to comment if you have questions. I do want to point out that there are some places which are closer to Dalaran to farm the quest items, but that those places are not accessible to level 70 characters just starting Wrath of the Lich King. I leave finding them as an exercise to the level 80 reader!

WoW Jewelcrafting Gold Guide, Part 1: Prospecting

Introduction

Welcome to my blog on World of Warcraft gold secrets! To start things off, here is part 1 of a 3 part series: Jewelcrafting Gold Guide. I have been playing a Jewelcrafter since the profession was introduced with WoW: The Burning Crusade expansion back in 2007. It has made me huge amounts of gold the entire time and now I am sharing the method with you.

You probably know that prospecting is the way to get jewels to cut to level your jewelcrafting skill, but did you know that prospecting alone can make you rich? Never mind the cutting, which just adds to the profit!

Prospecting

Using nothing except prospecting I routinely make 300, 500 even 700 gold per day for 10 minutes work. The key is to buy ore as cheaply as possible, and you can routinely double or even triple your gold just from selling the raw gems. At level 70 I paid 25g each for stacks of Adamantite Ore. At level 80 the price point has not changed much, still 25-30g, and I prospect Saronite Ore instead for the new Wrath of the Lich King gems. Cobalt Ore (like Fel Iron Ore before it in Burning Crusade) is not as likely to yield blue quality gems. You do need to have Wrath of the Lich King expansion installed to prospect the Saronite, as 400 skill is required and the Jewelcrafting trainers are found in the new Northrend area.

Usually there will be 10-30 stacks of ore at this cheaper price, every day I look at the Auction House. I buy it all, prospect it and cut a few each of the popular gems to sell (this is optional, we will explore better ways to profit from the gems in part 2 of my Jewelcrafting Gold Guide.)

Uncut gems

The uncut blue gems in red and orange, like Scarlet Ruby and Monarch Topaz almost always sell because they are used for maximizing Damage per Second and Heal per Second output in many different cuts (although if you can get good patterns for these colors and cut them yourself, all the better!) In my experience these are more likely to sell than any other rare gems, with Yellow (Autumn's Glow) a close third. These gems alone will bring you out ahead in profit on the stacks of ore you bought, and we haven't even monetized the green gems yet!

For green quality gems, cut a few of the Bloodstones into Runed Bloodstone and Delicate Bloodstone - these are bread and butter gems that will be used by players as long as they are raiding for better gear and need "stopgap" gems to fill slots. The rest of the green gems will be used for better purposes than cuts!

Macro and conclusion

As a bonus, here is the macro I use to make prospecting a little less tedious. Hit escape key, then click Macros and click New to make a new macro. Put these two lines into the macro box:

/cast Prospecting
/use Saronite Ore

That will automate the process of clicking on the ore stack for you. Drag your new macro to an ability bar and you are good to go - now you can hit one key on your keyboard over and over instead of clicking the skill, then the bag slots to get the Prospecting done.

In part 2 of my Jewelcrafting Gold Guide, I will talk about the absolute fastest way to make gold from this skill - faster than prospecting, even! It is like falling out of a tree. Part 3 will go a little more in depth for those who enjoy making the most of their professions, with a method to diversify and increase your gold income from the byproducts of Jewelcrafting. So stay tuned!
